This piece embodies the feeling of freedom. Both in the movement and the surprising combination of textures. They have the perfect light-weight and flight-like qualities to define the intention and movement of the piece. The focal point is a combination of paper birch and a paper wasp hive. If you haven't ever seen one of these in person, they are stunning with their intricately built pattern and texture. I added gold to honor the tones of the nest and pull out the warmth.
This piece in particular had a journey I learned a lot from. It started quickly with a lot of exciting color and palette knife movements that felt free and easy. I was feeling so good that I quickly moved to adhering natural elements to the canvas. The next morning when I looked at it, I immediately hated it. It had gone from a light, free feeling to a heavy, awkward piece. After building up my courage, I decided to cut the wood off the canvas. Leaving a hole in the canvas. I had to sit with what felt like a total failure. After I allowed myself to grieve and feel the loss, I was hiking and spotted the abandoned paper wasp nest, it came to me quickly where to go. And I remembered there’s always a way.
