For me, I first put nature to canvas in this piece. I freed my nearly dormant artist soul with it. And because art and life are so connected, I relearned lessons: I have the power to transform like this piece did a few times. Sit with discomfort to understand how you feel instead of discarding whatever is causing that discomfort. There are clues in that to get to where you want to go. And finally, there’s beauty in the raw display of emotions. I could have made something beautiful as a way to express ‘HEART’, but this is a more true display.
This story behind this piece: it started exciting, then turned awkward, then turned into my heart on canvas. It started as a what I was calling "blood butterfly". A quick explorative underpainting using so much red in such a way that it looked like a butterfly was literally made out of blood and bark. Not really what I was going for. But after sitting with that discomfort, I discovered a process layering my work. It also reminded me to not be afraid of ugly because ugly is only a few moves away from stunning. And therein lies the magic of creation.
